How does a woman with a degree in botany from a British university, who had turned her back on God, find herself owning a clinical counseling center with a solid Christian foundation in Westlake? In the late 1970's, Carol J. (Hendry) Ball moved to the USA due to her husband's job transfer. She came back to faith through the ministry of Bay Presbyterian Church and in a class on prayer and meditation asked the Lord, "Do you have a commission for me?" The answer she heard, "Healing is your work," began a chain of events that led Carol to her calling in life. While Carol was setting up the Glenview Center for Child Care and Learning in Bay Village her gift for counseling came to the attention of a woman in her fellowship group at church. She surprised Carol by announcing that she was prayerfully being led to pay for Carol's tuition for her Masters degree in counseling at Ashland Theological Seminary. Carol was awarded this degree in 1987 and then obtained her state counseling licensure. She went back to the seminary to complete her Master of Divinity degree in 2000.

In 1998, Carol founded C.J. Hendry & Associates, Inc., a group practice which offers individual, marriage, and family counseling. Her vision for the practice is one in which counselors of different specialties are available day, evening, and weekend and the pain in the lives of those with whom they work is healed. The practice continues to expand and grow as referrals come in locally from former clients, doctors and clergy and employee assistant groups, and nationally from the referral networks of the American Association of Christian Counselors and Focus on the Family.

In 2002 the C.J. Hendry counselors expanded into an adjoining office suite and named the space the OliveGrove. They have a vision for a professional ministry which provides resources for effective Christian living. Clinical counselor Carol Wentling Klekota also founded Hopewood Retreat Ministries in Amherst in 2000. This ministry provides a quiet place for people to be still, find spiritual rest and refreshment, and offers one day and weekend retreats throughout the year. The counselors provide support and encouragement for each other in these developing ventures.

Susan Zacharias, is a specialist in eating disorders and a social worker with a background in corrections. In the cold January of 1996 Sue volunteered to lead a spiritual group for adolescents at Parmadale Children's Home. Returning home one day she noticed her four cats lounging on the furniture in her home looking cozy. She thought how lucky the cats were to be in a warm environment instead of outside in the cold and found herself reflecting on how given other circumstances the lives of the children at Parmadale could have been very different. This motivated Sue to undertake her Masters degree in counseling at Ashland Theological Seminary graduating in 2000. Sue then began to search for a place where her counseling skills could be integrated with a faith-based approach. She joined C.J. Hendry & Associates in 2001 as a clinical counselor and became a co-owner in 2004.

We visited with Carol and Sue recently, and listened as they outlined their company's services and philosophy;
